Media: Rely on Appeal to Authority to vet information

Critical thinking, as we’re taught to do it, isn’t helping in the fight against misinformation.

Instead, they say we should “check the source” in a form of “appeal to authority”.

The problem with the blind Appeal to Authority is that authorities are wrong, surprisingly often. The truth of a statement does not depend on “who says it”, but on the underlying facts and logic.

Teaching students to focus on an appeal to authority is training students not to think for themselves but to “trust the experts”.
