Social: Social media influencers not so bright?

Read this: TikTok shredded as Osama bin Laden’s ‘Letter to America’ gets viral praise: ‘Terrorist propaganda’

Young social media types put out videos suggesting support for Bin Laden’s “Letter to America”, and the attack on the U.S. on September 11, 2001, which killed about 3,000 people. This really did happen – but for context, this story says most of the videos did not get so much attention until the media began a de facto promotion of the story. Politicians then seized upon the story to promote their own desire to shut off access to TikTok, in the U.S.

On the other hand, it seems our education system has failed to teach useful subjects like reading, history, logic.  Another example of their lack of knowledge: How to show you know nothing of history without saying you know nothing of history – Social Panic (coldstreams.com)

Have our schools created a generation of narcissistic fools who feel compelled to demonstrate their foolishness by posting online videos about it?

“Influencers” is a fancy title for narcissists who view themselves as talented – and who often mistake the privilege of being cute for being intelligent.  Eventually they open their mouths and nonsense pours forth.  57% of surveyed Gen Z say they would like to be a social media influencer, if they could.

We should probably have some sympathy for these youth who have been brainwashed in to believing things that are not true, and today harbor intense hatred of other groups based on ethnicity and age. They live unhappy lives filled with rage. They need help, but will they seek help?

In the end we saw:

  • Selective quotes from a terrorist’s open letter, to promote a new round of antisemitism and hatred of the U.S.
  • Quotes taken out of context, and delivered to (mostly) other young people who lack the historical context and critical thinking skills to understand the messaging
  • The media – which likes to focus on outrage culture – giving this topic more attention than it deserved, thereby propelling more views of the original
  • Politicians use this episode to promote their desire to shut down TikTok
  • We learned that a lot of young people have a poor grasp of history.
  • We’ve also learned from this and other episodes that many people view the world as “oppressed” versus “oppressor” (and anyone can define who is is who). “Social justice” means the oppressor is guilty and the oppressed are innocent victims. No other facts are needed to discern justice.

Regarding the latter point, this is a failure of our education system and I use myself as an example of that failure. I attended public school in the 1960s and 1970s. Our own history classes in school ended with World War 2, in the 1940s. If 9/11 had occurred after WW2, I would not have known about it based on my public school education. I did not know when the Korean War occurred until I looked it up, as an adult, when in my 50s. In fact, I knew nothing about the Korean War. It is likely that many of the young people posting these videos, born after 9/11/01, knew nothing about 9/11.
