Maps: The size of countries, in reality

Here is the map most of us have seen, or the next one after this:

Some times this map is centered on the United States, like this:

Both of the above maps, however, are very misleading due to how the project real land masses wrapped over a sphere (the earth) onto a flat map perspective. In some ways, these map projections have been used as a propaganda tool – particularly to make Russia (formerly USSR) look larger and more menacing.

When the map is drawn so that each country has a representation of its true size, look at what happens:

Right away, you notice that Greenland and Russia are much smaller than portrayed in most maps.
