Climate communications: When air temperatures are normal, report “land surface temperature” – much scarier!

Climate communications: When air temperatures are normal, report “land surface temperature” – much scarier!

I am covering the media’s insanity both here and on my coldstreams.com blog.

35 C/95 F is a perfectly normal summer time temperature. But, as of July 2023, it is now standard practice for the media to report what are perfectly normal summer time ground surface temperatures (but since most of us have never looked at them before, this is new and sounds dramatic – but it’s not):

With the air temperature rising above 35C (95F) and the ground surface temperature soaring as high as 80C in some parts of the country, residents and visitors have taken to carrying portable fans and covering themselves up to avoid getting burnt. Some hats even have fans built in.

The Guardian is a parody of actual news, originally from the UK, but now offering a US edition. The Guardian’s breathless reporting is off scale silly. And nearly always Doom and Gloom – your Daily Doomer!

Reminder – the right way to report on climate issues is with verifiable facts, logic and persuasive arguments. Exaggeration and the use of well known propaganda methods, and speculative assertions that prove false – leads to the Never Cry Wolf effect, and eventually no one believes anything any more and tunes it all out.
