Media, Economy: New grad can’t find work
She has a BA and MA in English from Stanford University, says she is an international student on a student visa. She does not have a work visa but hopes to find work with the short term OPT visa: I graduated from Stanford a few months ago but can’t land a job. I’m working 3 part-time gigs and struggling with shame.
Many writers attended elite private universities to earn degrees costing $300,000 to $450,000 in tuition, fees, housing and other expenses (at the unsubsized price) – to earn degrees in a field with an average annual job salary of about $50k/year (per BLS). She did a study abroad in Japan. She lives – now – in the SF Bay area, one of the most expensive places in the United States.
She says humanities degrees teach people to think … implying that other studies might not teach people to think. This is a common message and not specific to her.
She is likely a good, nice person but her pathway does not seem to make economic sense. She might find work by looking more widely across the U.S., including in smaller cities whose cost of living is far less than the SF Bay Area.
