She became a naturalized US citizen around the age of 12 – but the right-wing media is running with this false narrative: Illegal Immigrant Wins Mayoral Election in Major City – PJ Media
The article is written by Michael Cantrell who has done ZERO to research the claim, which is easily shown as false.
The candidate made stupid and untrue comments that she was illegal, during a June event – in a clumsy attempt to support illegal immigrants.
Kaohly Vang Her is a U.S. citizen.
🧾 Background and Clarification
- In a 2025 Minnesota House debate, Rep. Kaohly Vang Her stated, “I am illegal in this country. My parents are illegal here in this country,” aiming to evoke empathy during a vote on healthcare access for undocumented adults.
- This sparked public confusion and media scrutiny, but Her later clarified, “I’m a citizen,” explaining that her family’s refugee status was expedited through a claimed familial connection.
- Legal status confirmed: Multiple sources, including FOX 9 and Minnesota Reformer, affirmed that Her is a documented immigrant and U.S. citizen. It would be illegal for a non-citizen to serve in the Minnesota Legislature.
FOX 9 news reviewed her citizenship documents and confirms that she is a legal U.S. citizen.

- 7% of Minneapolis residents speak Spanish
- 3% speak Somali
- 2% speak Hmong
- 1% speak Vietnamese
He did not make any comments in Spanish, however, nor in Hmong. Many suggest he was pandering to a vocal minority of immigrants.
